Great Falls, MT - The #14-ranked Westminster Griffins invaded the McLaughlin Center tonight, and bounced back from their first loss in league play by downing the University of Great Falls Lady Argonauts 75-46, dropping UGF to 3-17 (0-8 in conference) on the season. The Griffins improve to 18-5, 7-1.
It was the same recipe for disaster that foiled the Lady Argos' upset bid as they continued the combination of poor shooting and untimely turnovers which has plagued them for much of the season. The Lady Argos missed their first 10 field goal attempts before senior guard Kassie Holmlund (Great Falls, MT) stopped the bleeding with a short jumper to put UGF on the board; the basket came with under 13 minutes remaining in the half.
For the game, the Lady Argos managed just 13 made field goals (13-for-50, 26%), including a dreadful 1-for-14 (7%) showing from behind the three-point arc, while committing 23 turnovers. Conversely, Westminster scored with relative ease, shooting 57% (25-for-44) for the game. The Lady Argos did cause a little ruckus defensively, forcing 22 Westminster turnovers on the night.
"You just can't shoot that poorly and expect to win," said UGF head coach Shawn Chaffin. "Westminster is a very good, well-coached team. I was pretty happy with the way things went early on. We were able to force some turnovers and we did a good job holding them to one shot per possession. But in the end, when you turn it over too much and struggle to score it almost doesn't matter what you do defensively."
Freshman guard Nicole Yazzie (Taylorsville, UT) led a trio of Griffins in double figures with 18 points to go with six assists. Yazzie and fellow freshman guard Allie Eastman (Rich, UT) combined for six of the Griffins' 11 three-point baskets on the night. Eastman finished with 13 points and five rebounds while teammate McKenzie Jessop (Murray, UT) added 12 points and seven rebounds.
For UGF, junior forwards Kirilynn Winkler (Great Falls, MT) and Katie Wright (Cedaredge, CO) hit for 10 points and six rebounds apiece. Fellow junior Marissa Skogen (Great Falls, MT) chipped in with eight points, seven rebounds, seven steals and two blocked shots.
The road to the Lady Argos' first conference win of the season gets no easier as they host #11 Lewis-Clark State on Saturday night. The Warriors, who handed Westminster its only loss in conference thus far, were 59-43 winners up on the highline tonight against MSU-Northern. Saturday's tip time is set for 6pm.
