The Argos enjoyed solid shooting themselves in the opening frame, connecting on 12-of-22 (55%) from the field. However, 14 first half turnovers and a ghastly 3-for-11 (27%) showing from the free throw line resulted in a 48-33 halftime deficit which the Argos were never able to overcome.
"We just shoot ourselves in the foot sometimes," said UGF head coach Steve Silsby. "When you're shooting the ball well as we were, 14 turnovers just kills you. If you cut those turnovers in half and score on the possessions you get as a result it's a completely different game. We've also got to do a better job from the free throw line."
Both teams cooled off considerably in the second half, with the Argos actually outscoring the visitors 24-19. However, the home-standing Argos never mustered a serious threat to the Warriors' lead, despite holding them to 29% (7-for-24) shooting in the half. UGF was just a smidge better at 31% (9-for-29) from the field while failing to connect on all seven of their attempts from behind the three-point arc.
Derek Gianukakis (Republic, WA) led a trio of Warriors in double figures with 14 points, 12 of which came in the first half. Guards Daniel Williams (Los Angeles, CA) and Jared Giammona (Santa Rosa, CA) chipped in with 10 points apiece.
For the second consecutive game, the Argos managed to hold the opposition's leading scorer to well below his season average as Warrior guard Markus Monroe (Monrovia, CA), who came in averaging over 18 points per outing, was limited to just five points on 2-of-13-shooting.
The Argos were paced by the 20 points of sophomore guard Kevin Harris (Houston, TX) who came off the bench to net 15 of his game-high total in the first half. Harris canned 5-of-6 first half field goal attempts while hitting on 3-of-3 from behind the arc. His 30-footer as time expired in the half was true and would have cut the deficit to 12 while giving UGF some momentum entering the second frame, but it was waved off by the officials.
Sophomore forward L.J. Jones (Anaheim, CA) pumped in 17 points, 12 of which came in the second half as he picked up for Harris who cooled off. Jones also managed eight rebounds on the night. Sophomore forward JayTee Tarpley (Dubois, ID) led the Argos on the backboard with a career-high 10 caroms to go with eight points.
