Three new football recruits signed Frontier Conference/NAIA letters of intent to play football at the University of Montana Western, head coach Rich Ferris announced today. The three new Bulldogs are Tanner Benedict, a 5-foot-8, 183 lbs. defensive end and running back from Whitefish, Mont.; Carson Hilliard, a 5-foot-10, 200 lbs. running back from Billings, Mont. and George Grismer, a 5-foot-9, 190 lbs. linebacker from Billings, Mont.
Benedict earned second team all-conference honors as a defensive end and honorable mention honors as a running back. He rushed for 556 yards and five touchdowns and led his team in sacks with nine. He also competes in wrestling and track. Benedict received all-conference and all-state honors in wrestling and all-conference honors in track.

"Tanner is a very fun player to watch," Ferris said. "He uses the most of his abilities to make plays on both offense and defense."

Benedict has maintained a 3.7 GPA and received academic all-state honors. He is the son of  Mario and Terri Benedict and will major in education.

Grismer recorded 80 tackles, two quarterback sacks and one interception in his senior season to earn all-conference and all-state honors. He also competes in basketball and track.

"George comes to us from a very successful program and has been well coached," Ferris said. "He is aggressive, athletic and very intelligent."

Grismer, the son of John and Helen Grismer, will graduate this spring from Billings West High School. He will major in environmental sciences.

Hilliard will graduate this spring from Billings Skyview High School. In his senior season, he rushed for 992 yards and nine touchdowns and 1,993 yards and 21 touchdowns during his career. Hilliard was an all-conference and all-state selection and was selected to play in this summer's East-West Shrine All-Star football game.

"The minute I saw Carson playing in the AA summer camp, I wanted him to be a Bulldog," Ferris added. "He plays very low to the ground with a great forward lean. The best quality Carson possesses is his character. He is an outstanding person."

Hilliard also competes in wrestling and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is the 2010 Class AA 189-pound state champion. The son of Lynn Hilliard and Bob Hilliard, he will major in education with an emphasis in special education.
