Kansas City, Mo. - (Box
Score) No. 7 seed Southern Nazarene
University (Okla.) held off three potential game-tying three-point
attempts in the final 30 seconds to post an 81-78 victory over the
University of Montana Western in the second round of the 2010 Buffalo
Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship Friday
evening at Municipal Auditorium.
Sophomore guard Daniel White
led a balanced scoring effort with 17 points as the Crimson Storm pulled
away down the stretch. White also pulled down a team-high eight
rebounds and collected four steals in the contest. Southern Nazarene
pushes its record to 27-7 on the year and moves into quarterfinal round
for the first time since reaching the national championship game in
1998. The Crimson Storm will take on No. 15 seed Robert Morris College
(Ill.) Saturday at 8 p.m. CT.
Senior forward Vladimir Bulut,
sophomore forward Jon West and senior post Jeremy Lightfoot all scored
13 points in the victory, while sophomore guard Adrian Hunter connected
for 11 points for Southern Nazarene. The Crimson Storm shot 53.4 percent
(31-of-58) from the field while committing just eight turnovers in the
contest.
With 8:28 remaining, senior post JaRon Brown scored to
give Montana Western its final lead of the night at 67-66. Lightfoot
helped Southern Nazarene regain the lead moments later with a basket in
the lane that sparked a run of five straight points that pushed the
Crimson Storm lead out to 71-67 with just over six minutes on the clock.
Southern Nazarene eventually stretched the lead out to six points
before the Bulldogs rallied one final time.
Trailing 81-75 in
the final minute of play, junior guard Cody Thueringer drilled a
three-pointer to bring Montana Western within 81-78 with 36 seconds
left. Thueringer then came up with a steal on Southern Nazarene's next
offensive possession, and the Bulldogs looked to tie the game from
three-point range. After the initial miss by senior forward Garrett
Fink, Thueringer came up with the offensive rebound. The Bulldogs called
timeout to set up a play, and worked the ball to senior guard Terry
Hauser. His three-point try from the corner was blocked out-of-bounds by
White, giving the Bulldogs one more possession.
Montana Western
worked the ball around to Fink, who was just off the mark with a
three-point shot at the buzzer, enabling Southern Nazarene to escape
with the victory.
"We are excited to live for another day and
for this opportunity," said Southern Nazarene head coach Adam Bohac.
"The kids played hard and it was a real credit to our character."
The
lead changed hands nine different times in the first half. Southern
Nazarene led by five points twice in the period, the last coming at
36-31 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Brandon Brown with 3:35 on
the clock. Montana Western then scored six of the final seven points of
the period, including a basket by sophomore post Shane Callaghan with 12
seconds remaining, to even the contest at 37-37 heading into the
intermission.
