Freshman post Andy Garland picked up the first double-double of his
collegiate career and senior guard Chad Vaculin hit a clutch 3-pointer
with less than a minute left as the Carroll (Mont.) College basketball
team beat NCAA Division I Eastern Washington 58-56 Saturday night (Nov.
1).
The Saints (2-0) led 33-18 at the half, but the Eagles surged to come back within one point with about 50 seconds left on the clock.
Carroll turned to Vaculin, who ran off a pick by senior Zach Parks and threw in a 3 from the corner of the court to give the Saints a four-point cushion.
"The kids executed it, he got a great screen and a great pass," said Saints head coach Gary Turcott.
Senior Josh Saunders picked up the assist on the play.
The Saints came out fast against the NCAA Division I team that had size and speed on Carroll.
"They were bigger, they were awful quick, too," said Saints head coach Gary Turcott. "We played one game and they haven't, and I think that helped."
Garland's performance certainly didn't hurt. The Missoula Sentinel product and last year's Gatorade Player of the Year had a breakout performance with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
He spread out the points, going 6 of 10 from the field, including a 3-pointer, and 4 of 5 from the free throw line.
