Head coach Bill Huebsch and the MSU-Northern volleyball team are excited to announce the signing of Ashley Ponce, a 5-foot-2 libero/defensive specialist from La Mirada, Calif.

Ponce earned First Team All-League honors for La Mirada High School and was named the team MVP the past two seasons. As a junior, she led La Mirada in serving percentage, and as a senior led her team in service reception and digs.  She was also named team captain her senior year, leading her team to the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs.

As a member of the So-Cal Juniors, she has traveled to Nevada, Florida and Arizona playing in national volleyball tournaments.  Ponce has been playing travel and school volleyball since her eighth grade year.

"The national play has helped develop my work and leadership skills," Ponce said.

As a student-athlete, she maintains a 4.1 overall GPA and is ranked in the top 50 of La Mirada High School. Ponce has earned scholar-athlete honors each year.

She is the daughter of Elias and Rosie Ponce, and sister to Dulce.

"I chose Northern because of the amazing nursing program and the friendly environment," Ponce added.

"Ashley is exactly the type of defensive player we want on the court," Huebsch said. "She communicates and passes well in serve receive, reads well defensively and fearlessly pursues the ball. We look for her to make us a better defensive team in 2017 and the future."
