Four student athletes have signed Frontier Conference/NAIA letters of intent to play football at the University of Montana Western, according to head coach Rich Ferris.

Jerome Brovold is a 6-foot-2, 200 lb running back/linebacker from Alberton, Mont. He will graduate this spring from Alberton High School. Brovold , an all-conference selection, rushed for 658 yards with six touchdowns during his senior year. Defensively, he recorded 74 tackles.

"Jerry is a fantastic three-sport athlete in a very competitive league," Ferris said. "He physically stands out on a football field, not only with his size, but also with his ability. He has the ability to gain yards with two or three defenders at once."

Brovold also played basketball and ran track for two years receiving all-conference and all-state honors.

Brovold received academic all-state honors and maintained a 3.0 GPA during high school. He is the son of Bill and Darla Brovold and is undecided on his major.

Ben Deehart is a 6-foot, 195 lb middle linebacker from Eureka, Mont. He will graduate from this spring from Lincoln County High School (LCHS). In his senior season, Deehart had 174 tackles and four interceptions. He has 273 career tackles.

Deehart earned first team all-conference and received all-state recognition. He was voted LCHS linebacker of the year and most inspirational player. Deehart also participated in basketball.

"Ben is a perfect example of a member of the Ed Newell football program, " says Ferris. "Ben is tough, aggressive and fast. His 174 tackles puts him in the top five tackles in the nation. Ben knows how to get to the ball."

Deehart is the son of Mike and Teri Deehar and will major in education at UMW.

Brady Shortman  is a 6-foot-3, 245 lb tackle from Fairfield, Mont. He will graduate this spring from Fairfield High School. He earned second team all conference honors.

During his senior year, Shortman had 25 tackles. For his career he recorded 45 tackles and two interceptions. Shortman also participated in golf.

"We feel very fortunate to have signed such a highly required offensive lineman," coach Ferris said. "Brady has the tools and size to come and compete for a spot on our offensive line."

Shortman is the son of Marlon and Christi Shortman and will study Environmental Science at Montana Western.

Alex Waltari is a 6-foot-1, 185 lb defensive back from Great Falls, Mont.  Waltari earned first team all-state honors and was selected to play in this summers East-West Shrine Game.

As a senior he had 40 tackles, eight interceptions and 92 return yards. He also participated in basketball and baseball.

"Alex is and outstanding addition to our football program," Ferris said. "I have enjoyed watching him develop through his high school career. I believe if Alex continues to work as hard as he has in the past he will be an extremely vital part of the future of our program."

He will graduate this spring from C.M. Russell High School and is the son of Bob and Jean Waltari. His UMW major is undecided.
